Jayne Hawley is seeking election as a Labour councillor for Stannington Ward. Jayne sets out in her own words why she hopes she can count on your vote.
I have lived in Stannington for 25 years. Born in 1960, I grew up in a mining village in Derbyshire, the daughter of a coal miner and school support worker.
I have been a member of the Labour Party since the age of 17, my politics were shaped by the struggles of the miners and steelworkers in the 1980s.
With qualifications from both Leeds and Sheffield universities, I taught in Further and Higher Education for over 30 years, working at Sheffield College, Derby University, and Sheffield City Council and most recently at Northern College, near Barnsley.
I am passionate about the importance of access to good education; I see this as the right of every adult, young person and child. I am committed to fighting Tory cuts in Higher, Further, and Adult Education and to implementing policies that support families living in poverty who are facing dreadful cuts in welfare benefits and tax credits.
I am married to Paul. Together we share a keen interest in gardening, bee-keeping and the environment.
